Is Schalke 04 selling its eSports department?
Will the eSports department save FC Schalke 04 from insolvency? Sport1 brought up a sale of the eSports department to save the club in case of relegation to the 2.Bundesliga.
The Gelsenkirchen-based team competes in League of Legends, FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer. Sport1 puts the market value of the division at 20 million euros. Money the club could desperately use after its relegation from the Bundesliga.
The "League of Legends" starting place alone has cost the club 8 million euros.
In total, the club has over 240 million euros in debt.
"In the future, e-sports will help Schalke 04 take the next steps economically and continue to promote the main business of football," marketing director Alexander Jobst once said. But if the "core business" declines, every option will be examined to bring the first team back into the Bundesliga.
Schalke 04 are in second-to-last place in the Virtual Bundesliga, ahead of Eintracht Braunschweig. So the eFootballers of FC Schalke 04 are a bit more successful than the Bundesliga footballers. But this is only a small consolation for the eSports department of the Königsblauen.
As gameswirtschaft.de reports, the "League of Legends" commitment could put the non-profit status of the club in jeopardy. This is because the German parliament plans to only accept eSports as "non-profit" as long as they are "electronic sports simulations". This would apply to FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer, but not to the 8 million euro investment League of Legends. Another reason to sell the division.
